One of the most common questions I get asked on social media is about the lyrics to "Benjamin's Room" and other songs from Love Songs for the Chemical Generation.
I've long been wary of sharing my early lyrics, for many reasons, including the fact that some early pieces don't actually have lyrics, just sounds. Nevertheless, people keep asking, so wherever I can I'm starting to reveal some of the lyrics and their sources…
I recently wrote this essay about "Benjamin's Room", its lyrics, and the song's origins, including how it relates to my youth in Devon, my recent song 'Snowdrops', and my years in Manchester.
Along the way there's a lot of detail (perhaps too much detail) about the recording of the song, and it's belated popularity on the streaming services. But I think a small number of you might find it interesting...
